Ferris Bueller couldn’t be more right when he proclaimed in the eponymous movie about him, “life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it!”.
When I was a kid, things happened a lot slower. Days dragged on, and I hated it. All I wanted to do was grow up and be an adult.

But, in 2024, I actually wish the opposite. I wish life would slow down so I could enjoy the days I have.
But why does life go quicker, or seem to go quicker, as you get older?
Well, according to Havard University, a study found that it’s likely we are just processing things at a slower rate, with less frames per second.
The study says, in its words:
“This is what leads to time passing more rapidly. When we are young, each second of actual time is packed with many more mental images. Like a slow-motion camera that captures thousands of images per second, time appears to pass more slowly.
People are often amazed at how much they remember from days that seemed to last forever in their youth. It’s not that their experiences were much deeper or more meaningful, it’s just that they were being processed in rapid fire.”
So there might be some mental logic behind it, but it’s a very weird phenomena.
For me, I’ve had enough mental trauma in my life to very likely affect my cognitive abilities. Although I can still easily function as a regular adult, my memory is quicker to fade than what it used to do.
Some things still don’t sit right with me, like mental blanks, writer’s block and more. Life can certainly be challenging post mental stress.
All I really wish for is to enjoy the here and now, and suck in every good bit for all it’s worth.
Love,
Zak
